The call from James Halliday to tell me we were the Dark Horse of the Year award winner was, at first, surreal. Arlewood has never been a brand to catch popular attention.
Twenty years of toil as a wine producer had culminated in a decision to move from the wine dress circle address of Wilyabrup to Forest Grove, on the south side of Margaret River, and a change to making wines that were personal rather than fashionable. It felt like that one phone call endorsed all of that.
This award is all about the new Arlewood. The location (Forest Grove), the people (Stuart Pym – winery & Russell Oates - vineyard), and me.
Like for so many small wine producers this type of accolade and endorsement from James Halliday can be a catalyst to greater success. It brings the eyes of the wine world onto you. I’m looking forward to this opportunity to share our wines, tell our story, and stake our own place in the Australian wine industry landscape.
Revered wine critic James Halliday AM is founder and author of the Halliday Wine Companion. The annual event marks the release of the Halliday Wine Companion, which is published by Hardie Grant Books and this year and is currently on sale nationally.
The awards were held in Melbourne in the Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria, attracting many prominent Australians who honoured the very best of Australian wine produced at vineyards across the country. It was pretty amazing to be in the room, let alone take home the Dark Horse award!
We have also recently picked up some awards in the Australian and New Zealand Boutique Wine Awards, a Gold Medal for the 2014 Semillon in Class 2 PLUS the SBS 2015 picked up a Silver Medal in Class 6.
